Notes: 10/5/03 - "Albatross overhead!" The last and the largest of an entrancing series of Grumman flying boats.

Originally ordered by the U.S. Navy as a PF-1A, this aircraft was delivered to the USAF as an SA-16A. It went to Chile in 1958 for Anti Submarine Warfare duty and was assigned s/n 566. In 1962 "097" was converted to HU-16B configuration. Around 1979 it was sold to the Confederate Air Force as N8064N, and more recently has been registered as N16HU.

N16HU landed at Moosehead Lake, Maine during the 2003 International Seaplane Fly-in, but unfortunately they moored on the other side of the lake. I did my best with my telephoto but couldn't get any close-ups. Maybe another time!

Notes: Definitely a "long-wing" Albatross! The span is 96'-8", which is nearly 17' more than its original design and a foot more than a DC-3 or C-47!

Notes: Resting easy. The aircraft was moored in the water and would drift one way and then the other in the gentle breeze. It was interesting to watch.
