Model: Grumman FM-2 Wildcat Registration: N19K
Year: Serial Number:
Engines: Wright R1820, 1350-HP Owner: Chris D. Stoltzfus
Location: Coatesville, PA, Stoltzfus Private Airport Photographer: Stoltzfus, Ken
Date: 1958 Present Registration: Present Owner (FAA info):
Notes: 06-21-03 (Rev. 10/22/03) - N19K was the second of the pair of Wildcats that my father bought from Matthew Kibler. (See N35MK above) The serial number listed on the FAA registration, 5975, is probably the Grumman Construction Number. Sources would indicate that the military serial number is 86741.

N19K had the slogan “No Pollyanna” on the left side just in front of the windshield. Webster defines Pollyanna as “an excessively or blindly optimistic person”. That probably fits any pilot who takes the Wildcat casually. It’s narrow gear and 1200 to 1350-HP gives it a propensity to go other than straight on initial acceleration, and one is wise to stay humble when flying it.

This aircraft had a Wright 1820-56WA which Father soon sold for $3500 - - thus the engine-less Wildcat! Some years later he sold the aircraft to Ernie Saviano, an airline pilot from the Midwest. Saviano brought an engine in and put the airplane together. He did a local test hop and headed west, roadmap in hand!

Note the large green crates in the background. Father bought over 900 new or factory overhauled Continental W670-9A engines, government surplus, for about $25 each. They were complete with all accessories and were in sealed foil inside these crates which were lined with tar paper. We had them in warehouses here and there, and some were outside for a while.

This is the Wildcat now owned by Kermit Weeks, of Polk City, FL and registered as N222FM.

Notes: 06-21-03 - Note more of the W670-9A's in the crates, and pressurized steel containers with radial engines to their left.
