Notes: 9/1/03 - Certainly a trophy-taker. I've never seen a Vagabond like this. And it's even in a period-style hangar!

The Vagabond was Piper's first short-wing aircraft, preceding the Clipper, Pacer and Tri-Pacer. As the story goes, Piper had a pile of 4130 tubing, Cub wings, and other parts left over after the war and decided to create an aircraft to use them up. The market was flooded with surplus "Cubs", so how about something side-by-side? Note the 8:00x4, Cub tires. Mr. Piper must have had a bunch of them left over too.

According to Mr. Siefer, the PA-15 Vagabond was "bare bones". No paint stripes, one stick, no shocks. The PA-17 Vagabond had dual sticks, shocks (thank you), and stripes. They have one door, on the right side.

Mr. Siefer is a student pilot, learning to fly in the Vagabond at Red Stewart Airport, Waynesville, OH. I wish him well.

Notes: N4643H has been meticulously restored, and with a lot of consideration given to originality. It has a C-85 Continental instead of the original A-65, and a fuel tank in the left wing to supplement the one ahead of the instrument panel, but otherwise it is quite pure.

Notes: That's not very complicated, is it?

One thing Mr. Piper did on the Vagabond was to switch from the Cub type heel brakes, to toe brakes.

Notes: "Piper Cub Vagabond Trainer". Interesting! I guess Mr. Piper wasn't quite ready to give up the "Cub" thing.
